About Monica (she/her/hers)

Hello! I am Monica Duque, a licensed art therapist, supervisor, artist, entrepreneur, educator and I am ready to partner with you in your journey toward healing and growth.

I have been working in the art therapy field for over 15 years, across diverse settings with populations including children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. I am passionate about walking alongside individuals as they embark in their restorative journey, taking a strength based therapeutic approach that is holistic and client centered. It is important to encompass the client's whole self in treatment, including all aspects of cultural identity. I also believe in the importance of identifying, developing and being a part of a supportive community.

Identity can be made up of a mix of life situation, experience and interactions with others. It sometimes leads to misconceptions, assumptions or judgments, leaving us looking in the mirror at a misrepresented image of who we really are or want to be.

The journey in healing and learning to find your true self doesn't have to be scary or lonely. We were not meant to go through or endure life challenges alone and recognizing a need for support is not a deficit, but a significant strength. Leaning on the right support can make times of uncertainty, a time to embrace change, build on strengths, develop new coping skills and feel more fulfilled in our specific life and situation.

Art Therapy... when words don't come easy or are not enough.

But what if I do not identify myself as an artist?... No problem! We are all creative beings in one way or another. We create on a daily basis, from the foods we put together, the way we organize our day, or even when we select what we will be wearing that day. Being able to access creativity is not just for a pastime or recreation. Learning to access and use the creative process within ourselves, can have a powerful impact on our overall well-being, self-awareness and it contributes to healing and growth. In art therapy the client is able to tap into their subconscious and use the therapeutic creative process to explore feelings, communicate, discover, connect, understand interpersonal relationships, as well as reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety.

As an art therapist I not only rely on my own therapy and supervision as part of my self-care practice, but also find support and healing in painting, create mix-media collage, spending time in nature and connecting with my support community.
