Healing Attachment & Family-of-Origin Trauma
Reclaim safety, connection, and self-trust.
Our early experiences shape how we see ourselves, relate to others, and move through the world. When childhood relationships were inconsistent, neglectful, or painful, it can leave lasting wounds that show up in adulthood – difficulty trusting others, fear of abandonment, people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, or feeling “too much” or “not enough.” These are often signs of attachment trauma or family-of-origin trauma, and they are deeply worthy of healing.
At Wholehearted Healing Collective, our therapists specialize in helping individuals break free from old relational patterns and build the capacity for secure, healthy connection – both with others and within themselves.
Understanding Attachment & Family-of-Origin Trauma
Attachment trauma occurs when the people who were supposed to provide safety, comfort, and attunement were also sources of fear, inconsistency, or emotional absence. Family-of-origin trauma may stem from:
- Emotional neglect or invalidation
- Enmeshment or parentification (being the caretaker as a child)
- Abuse (emotional, physical, sexual, or spiritual)
- Growing up with addiction, mental illness, or chronic conflict
- Experiencing rejection after setting boundaries or going “no contact”
Even when years have passed, the nervous system may still carry those early imprints – showing up as hypervigilance, dissociation, shame, codependency, or relationship anxiety. Healing is possible when we work gently with the body, mind, and inner parts that learned how to survive.
Therapy Approaches for Healing Attachment Trauma
Our team integrates evidence-based and experiential approaches designed to heal trauma at both the emotional and nervous system level:
Internal Family Systems (IFS) / Parts Work
IFS helps you connect with your inner “parts” – the “protector,” the “people-pleaser,” the “inner child” – and create compassionate dialogue among them. By understanding that there are no bad parts, you can release shame and integrate the exiled aspects of yourself that long for acceptance
Somatic Therapy & Mind-Body Healing
Attachment trauma lives in the body. Our clinicians use somatic techniques such as grounding, breathwork, and gentle movement to help regulate the nervous system and safely process stored tension, fear, and grief. This allows the body to relearn what calm, safety, and connection feel like.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT skills mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness — provide practical tools to manage intense emotions and build balanced relationships. They are especially helpful for individuals whose attachment wounds show up as emotional reactivity, fear of rejection, or difficulty setting boundaries.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR helps clients reprocess painful memories so the brain can “unstick” from the emotional charge of past experiences. It supports individuals in identifying and processing negative cognitions – deeply held beliefs about themselves that often develop from trauma, such as “I am not worthy,” “I am unsafe,” or “I cannot trust others.”
Through structured phases and bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity of these memories and fosters more adaptive, secure beliefs about oneself and relationships.
Relational Therapy
Our therapists emphasize the therapeutic relationship as a corrective emotional experience – a space where you can explore trust, boundaries, and authentic expression in real time with an attuned professional.
Therapy Groups for Attachment & Family-of-Origin Healing
In addition to individual therapy, we offer trauma-informed groups that provide community, skill-building, and shared understanding:
Post-Traumatic Growth Group
The concept of post-traumatic growth recognizes that while trauma can be deeply painful, the process of healing can also lead to meaningful personal transformation, including stronger relationships, increased self-understanding, and a renewed sense of trust.
Within a safe group environment, members can reflect on how early attachment patterns influence current relationships while practicing new ways of connecting with others.
No Contact: Estrangement Therapy Group
Designed for adult children navigating estrangement or low/no contact relationships with parents or family members. This group offers validation, grief support, and skills for rebuilding self-trust and identity after going no contact.
Adult DBT Skills Group
Learn evidence-based DBT skills in a supportive environment to help regulate emotions, reduce impulsivity, and improve relationship patterns shaped by attachment wounds.
No Bad Parts: IFS/ Parts Work Therapy Group
Based on Internal Family Systems, this group helps you meet and understand your inner parts with compassion. Build internal harmony and heal the parts of you that learned to protect or hide.
Each group is led by trauma-informed clinicians who specialize in attachment and relational healing. Participants often find that group work accelerates healing by providing safe connection and shared understanding.
